Aldbourne Allotment Association & Gardening Club
Aldbourne Allotment Association has 22 plots just off Marlborough Road on the outskirts of the village. The association was established in 2008 with grants from Awards for All, the National Lottery and Community First.
These grants enabled the purchase of a large communal shed and wood for edging the plots. The land itself is rented from Aldbourne Chase Farms. The plots are rented out by the plot or half plot and some families work together on one plot. Each plot is planted in an individual style. Allotment holders learn from each other, swop seeds and generally work together.
Surplus vegetables are sold through the Post Office Stores and there is often a stall in the village’s community market. Honey is also produced from beehives on the site.
Amongst all these achievements, the association has even won a prize for its float in the Aldbourne Carnival!
Each year there are two social events. In the summer there is a fun day when the plots are judged by Mr Brian Kingham, who awards the Kingham Shield for the best plot. This is followed by a BBQ. Members of the Gardening Club join us for this event.
In February we join the Gardening Club for a supper in the Old School Room. There is a speaker who gives a talk on a horticultural theme. The owner of Franchi Seeds spoke at a recent supper.
To apply for a plot or for any other allotments information please contact Alison Edmonds, see details below. Vacant plots are usually advertised in the news section.
The Gardening Club holds monthly meetings from September to April. There are competitions and outings to the Malvern Spring Show and Sheepdrove Farm, for example. For a copy of the programme of events for 2013 please see the download link below.
Anyone is most welcome to join the Gardening Club. Please contact Mary Cowan or Chris Rust for details.
