Aldbourne Children's Book Group
Aldbourne Children’s Book Group aims to bring children & books together – the group caters for children of any age from toddlers upwards, and provides great activities for children as well as a chance for busy mums and dads to get together. They also look at the odd book or two!
They run a variety of fun events throughout the year. Some are exclusive to members; some are run in conjunction with St. Michael’s School and others are open to the public. Typical examples include:
- Bedtime Stories in January
- Their school Book Swap day to mark World Book Day in March
- A celebration of National Share-a-Story Month in May
- The children’s book stall at the Combined Churches’ Fete in June
- The ACBG float at the Carnival Parade in September
- Their super firework party in November, serving hotdogs, scrumptious cider and cake!
Bringing authors and illustrators to local schools is an important part of their role in the village. They also provide story sacks to the Great Western Hospital and books to the local Surgery and other venues.
They review books for The Red House Book Award; the only major award in the country judged solely by children. They also run an after school Book Club, which gives children access to newly published fiction.
The group sit under The Federation of Children’s Book Groups. This is a national charity which has been established for over 40 years and is an umbrella organisation for local Children’s Book Groups.
The Committee always welcome new members, providing a great opportunity for anyone (particularly those new to the village) to get involved, to give something back to your community and to make new friends.
Family membership is £12 per year if in Aldbourne, or £14 for postal membership. This entitles members to entry to all events. Regular newsletters keep members informed and involved (see download link below). Do join up – everyone is welcome!
