The Digital TV Switchover begins in Aldbourne
- Wednesday 8th February 2012 from 6:00am till 6:00pm
The digital switchover of the Hannington transmitter (which supplies Aldbourne with its TV broadcasts) begins on Wednesday February 8th 2012. On this date BBC2 analogue will be switched off, and unless your TV broadcasts are received through Sky or Freeview, you will not be able to watch BBC 2 on your sets. Any set which is “digital” ready must be retuned to pick up the new service. All sets will need to be retuned.
On Wednesday 22nd February the rest of the terrestrial channels (BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5) will have the analogue signals turned off, and as above, you will need to retune your set to digital.
If you have a modern TV set which is digital ready, all you will need to do is retune your set to carry on watching your favourite programmes. If you don’t have a digital ready TV, you may have to buy a Freeview box (priced anywhere from £15 – £90 and available at many shops such as Argos, Currys etc). There are other options given to you if you visit the digitalUK website.
It might not possible to retune in advance of the switchover if you receive your signal from our local relay transmitter sited in Aldbourne – until analogue is actually switched off and digital switched on, you can’t “test”. You can tell if you receive from the Aldbourne transmitter by seeing if your roof/loft aerial looks like this: --|--|--|--|- with elements going top-to-bottom. The main Hannington transmitter is already providing digital signal along with the analogue but our local relay can only do one thing at a time.
Visit this website to see what YOU need to do to continue to watch your favourite programmes (and more).
Every household should have received a booklet explaining these changes and telling you what to do to ensure the switchover is as smooth and painless as possible for you. As long running TV advertisements have shown, there is also help for older and disabled people to provide them with everything they need at an all inclusive cost of £40 or free if you receive certain income related benefits. See helpscheme.co.uk for more details.
Don’t forget there are people in the village to help you if you are still bewildered about this switchover – contact your local Good neighbour Co-ordinator or ask at the library.
This only applies to TV – there are no plans to switch to digital radio in the foreseeable future.
