Summer Reading Challenge begins at Aldbourne Library
- Monday 16th July 2012 from 2:00pm till 8:00pm
The Summer Reading Challenge starts at Aldbourne Library on Monday 16th July.
Every year children from Aldbourne and surrounding villages have rushed to sign up to the challenge of reading 6 books over the course of the summer holidays.
Each year there is a different theme, and this year the joint theme is making a story in the laboratory and racing to an Olympic finish (think Hadron Collider and the London Olympics!) This year’s challenge is called Story Lab.
Children aged 4 – 11 are invited to read (or listen to) 2 books and find a Bronze coin, a further 2 books to find a Silver mirror and when they have completed 6 books they will receive a Gold medal. They will have adventures and activities along the way and gain prizes and incentives such as scratch and sniff stickers and Olympic wrist bands when they come to the library to talk about the books they have read.
The idea is to read challenging books – it’s a marathon, not a sprint – so all we ask is that the children spread their reading out across the holidays. Of course they may be going away – this will be taken into account when listening to reviews, and if they are going to stay in other parts of the country they may be able to take part at libraries in those places.
Parents and teachers have agreed that the challenges have kept the children reading throughout the summer and provided an incentive to read and enjoy books they might not otherwise have thought about reading. If Aldbourne Library doesn’t have books by a particular favourite author, items can be ordered from other libraries free of charge, or children may visit other libraries in Wiltshire with their library cards and take books out from there (excludes Swindon Libraries).
Last year 103 children joined the challenge at Aldbourne Library and 78 finished, a great achievement, can we do even better this year? Come along to Aldbourne Library (opening times below) and sign up from Monday 16th July onwards.
PS Grownups – if you’re feeling left out, ask about the South West Reading Passport also being run in libraries. Gives adults the chance to read and review books too (without the stickers and wrist bands!)
