Aldbourne Village Gallery, Carnivals Past

This is the earliest Aldbourne Carnival photo I've found so far. It cropped up in the collection of the Wiltshire Rural Life Society previously on display at the Great Barn, Avebury which was deposited at the Wiltshire Museum, Devizes in 2010. Sadly, it's only a copy of a postcard but on the reverse side a note says "Carnival Costume' postmarked Aldbourne 1909". It is widely believed that the first Aldbourne Carnival took place in 1905, with decorated bicycles. Another copy is in the Aldbourne Photographic Club collection which is now with the Aldbourne Community Heritage Group.

Do you recognise the photo? Is it in your family album or shoebox in the attic?

Any and all information welcome as we move into the preparations for the 100th renewal of Aldbourne Carnival in 2015.

In honour of the Lunar New Year - everyone's flocking to Aldbourne (Thanks Mr WL for that snippet!)

Actually the last sheep drive I can remember was in 2007 (a Year of the Pig)

And in the Heart of the Village, thanks to hard work by the Aldbourne Community Heritage Group, we now have a Heritage Centre - just part of the display of photos for Aldbourne Carnival is on the Aldbourne Village Gallery

Three great Dr Who photos (1992) from Steve Maskell - thank you to all the contributors to the Aldbourne Present & Past Group on Flickr.
There are now 305 photos on display!

The main Village Gallery photostream (also Flickr) now has just over 3,500 photos

Both galleries include many, many Carnival photos. I'm adding my plea to Annie's (Village Issues) on this Forum, please support your village carnival, this year of all years; help is needed and if many lend a hand it will make this year an event to remember!
