Beating the Bounds turns 50!

Aldbourne’s annual boundary walk celebrated its fiftieth anniversary this week when over 125 walkers, aged from seven to over seventy, completed all or some of the 18 mile “Perambulation of the Bounds”.

The start of the walk was marked by the appearance of a very special guest, Dr. Trevor Tiplady, one of the trio of village residents responsible for reviving the walk in the 1960’s (more information here).

The anniversary occasion meant special ribbons, mugs and pamphlets had been commissioned, and these were then presented by Dr. Tiplady, and others, to the successful walkers on their arrival back on the Green.

Thanks must go to Paul Goodge and David Parmiter, the event organisers, for all of their hard work in creating a most memorable day, and they, in turn, would like to thank:

  • Landowners and farmers over whose land we cross
  • Marlborough Area Board and Aldbourne Parish Council for support and sponsorship
  • The Scout Group, WI and WINE for extra sustenance
  • Dr. Trevor Tiplady for inspiration
  • Mrs. Alison Edmonds for lots of things!
  • Mrs. A Barnes for the great ribbons
  • Bren Murphy for help designing mugs
  • Doc Watson for help with the anniversary leaflet
  • Valerie Hood & Jocelyn Evans for pre-ordered drinks
  • Brian Buckler and Keith Warren for keeping us safe on and crossing the roads
  • The Blue Boar for its hospitality

Commemorative mugs are still available (while stocks last) via the Post Office, priced £5 per cup. Free paper copies of the anniversary pamphlet are available too, or for an online version see the download link below.

If you’d like to know more about the walk have a look at this page in the community section. Alternatively you can contact Paul or David via the contact details below.

Finally, thanks to the Aldbourne Archive for their photograph of this year’s celebration goodies!
