Goddard’s Lane Culvert

We thought an update on the ongoing saga of the Goddard’s Lane Culvert renewal project might be in order.

The delays over recent weeks have been because the contractors found a gas pipe and a water supply pipe in the path of the new culvert.

It took a long time for Wiltshire Council to obtain the help of Wales and West Utilities to deal with the gas pipe, but this has now been done. Ironically the pipe was apparently an old one and not connected to the gas supply.

It has also taken some time for Thames Water to reposition the water supply pipe. They now plan to do this next Thursday (18th December), although initially this may just be a temporary job requiring a permanent replacement in due course.

The delays should not prevent Wilshire Council’s contractors from continuing the culvert work after the 18th even if the stream rises and, hopefully, they will complete it before it does anyway. We understand that, if necessary, they can do the work even if water is flowing, so we should have a new culvert within the next few weeks.

In the longer term the culverted section of the Bourne/stream up Lottage Road needs to be upgraded but that is probably a job for next year and will depend on funding.

In the meanwhile it will be interesting to see if the new culvert at Goddard’s Lane improves groundwater levels in the area and reduces the sort of problem we experienced last winter.
