Library half century in South Street

Please see the following forum post from Trish Rushen at Aldbourne Library:

“I would like to make an appeal to anybody reading this forum who may be or may have relatives or friends old enough to remember when the public library moved into South Street where it is to this day, next to the old forge. We know Wiltshire County Council signed the lease on May 25th 1962, but I believe the library did not actually move into the premises until 1963. However, so far, I haven’t found a definite date for this, and if possible, I would like to commemorate its half century in some way.

Len Liddiard told me that he and Jeb Jerram fitted it all out including laying the red tile floor still there to this day, how I wish I had pressed him for dates when I could. But there may still be those around who do remember.

This is some of what I have been told so far. The library used to be in the old school room and moved out when the new school buildings were opened (this would tie in with 1963). Before that, it may have been in the old church room in Marlborough Road (now demolished).

Thanks to all those already looking out for this date for me, including my supervisor Carol at Marlborough Library, Jo (of course!) and Marc Hart. And all those whose ears I assault about it in the library (verbally, not physically of course).”
