Golden Anniversary Concert for a Golden Band!

Saturday 26th January 2013 was a Golden Evening for Aldbourne Band despite the inclement weather. This was the Golden Anniversary concert of a Band that now ranks in the top 50 Brass Bands in the world.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Swindon were guests of honour, and together with a full house enjoyed a varied evening of music and song for this 50th annual concert by the Band at Immanuel United Reform Church, Upham Road, Swindon with very special guests The Immanuel Church Choir.

The Band’s programme included a Variation on Auld Lang Syne (soloist Adam Lownds) and The Joyful Skeleton (soloist Michael Smith). Also featured was Harmony Music, the test piece for the West of England Championship section finals due to take place on 10th March this year in Torquay.

The Immanuel Church Choir was in great voice, particularly for their rendition of Early One Morning, performed with great verve and humour; and, as always, the audience thoroughly enjoyed the repartee from the multi-talented Geoff Gleed, Minister, choirmaster and organist, whose summing up of the evening’s entertainment was both witty and uplifting.

The Chairman of Aldbourne Band, James Sheppard, paid tribute to Mr Jesse Jones and Mr Lionel Barnes – Mr Jones organised the first concert by Aldbourne Band at Upham Road, played in that concert as percussionist and is a past President of the Band. Mr Barnes played in the first concert and also at this 50th Anniversary Concert. Both gentlemen stood to receive a well-deserved round of applause from the audience.

Musical Director, David Johnson, dedicated the Band’s performance of Handel’s Largo to the late Fred Newman, a great supporter of Aldbourne Band who will be much missed.

The evening was also significant for history and heritage as the Friends of Aldbourne Band (Registered Charity No 1144039) launched a brand new venture, the Aldbourne Band Heritage Project. See this news story for further details.

Aldbourne Band’s next concert will be at Shrivenham Village Hall, on Saturday 23rd February at 7:30pm – for more information please visit the band website, see link below.
