National Libraries Day - Show your support!

Please see the following message from Aldbourne’s very own librarian (ok, ok… Library Assistant!) regarding the upcoming National Libraries Day. Over to Trish:

Saturday 8th February 2014 is National Libraries Day, a culmination of a week’s worth of celebrations in schools, colleges, universities, workplaces and public libraries across the UK.

Although Aldbourne Library is not open on a Saturday, we will be celebrating National Libraries week with quizzes for both adults and children at the Library on Monday 3rd February, Tuesday 4th and Thursday 6th February.

We’ll also give you the chance to say what you think about your local libraries (including Ramsbury, Marlborough and Aldbourne), how they enhance (or not!) our communities and are they still value for money (Aldbourne residents pay twice, once through council tax and once through the Parish Council precept)?

Is it worth it? Are libraries an anachronism in this day and age of digital technology? We would really like to hear your views, or if there is any way we could improve or expand our services to the village.

Just to inform those who don’t use the library, we have a pretty good range of both fiction and non-fiction books at Aldbourne, as well as DVDs (£1.90 for one week’s hire), audio books on tape or CD (also £1.90 for 3 weeks’ hire).

Thanks to willing volunteers, we supply Aldbourne Nursing Home with a regular selection of Large Print books, as well as supplying some visually impaired residents with spoken word books (free of charge).

Children’s books come in all media types from board books to Audio books, and we have a selection of children’s DVDs too. Anything we don’t have can be ordered for 80p (free for children’s items). You can also access eBooks for free three week download from the Wiltshire Libraries website, onto your tablet or eReader.

There is also a public PC for free use (soon to be upgraded) with a full office suite, internet access and email pick up point.

Library usage is dropping. Aldbourne Library has always been one of the busiest small libraries in the county, but issues are down, visits are down and membership not growing much. Can you help – or do you think this is inevitable? Comments and suggestions will be welcomed – do you love your library, or do you think it is a service which has had its day?

We would really like to know your views – come and see us during National Libraries week!
