Band Success for Best in the West

Aldbourne Band won a resounding victory at their last outing to the South West Brass Band Association Annual Championships, held in Torquay at the end of 2013.

They were placed first by adjudicators who were impressed with the beautiful and excellent playing. Best Soloist was also won by an Aldbourne player – Richard Hughes – for his contribution to the difficult contest piece ‘Year of The Dragon’ by Philip Sparke.

Interestingly, this is not the first time that the Band have won with this piece. In 1991 at a Reading Contest the Band gained first place in a large field with Bands from all over the South of England.

Chairman James Sheppard said “ This marvellous result shows what a consistently good standard the Band has achieved, through hard work and enthusiasm and the leadership of a great MD, David Johnson. We are looking forward to 2014 to take us to the next level, to be able to perform at The Royal Albert Hall, and to qualify for the British Open”

The all-important Area Championships are fast approaching on Sunday 9th March back in Torquay, where the Band have every hope of qualifying for the Nationals at the Royal Albert Hall. The test piece is St Magnus by Kenneth Downie.

For all enthusiasts and Band supporters there is a great opportunity to hear this being aired for the public on Saturday 25th January in Swindon. The Band will be giving a concert at Immanuel Church, Upham Road at 7:30pm. This will be the 51st year that this concert has taken place.

Tickets are £10 Adult and £2 for Under 16’s. Refreshments included. Tickets from Aldbourne Post Office, Alan Watson or on the door.
