The Aldbourne “Big Dig”

As many of you will know, the sports field area at Farm Lane was the site of a wartime military camp used by UK & American armies, and a UK camp since WW1.

Sport and leisure use of this area may be altered in the near future. Therefore, with the kind permission of the Parish Council, the opportunity is being taken to undertake a survey of the site (including Palmer’s Field) over 2 days using metal detectors and other archaeological methods, to see if any interesting artefacts can be recovered. No artefact will be taken away. The survey will be undertaken by the Wyvern Historical Society in association with Wessex Archaeology. The dates for this event are Saturday 8th June and Sunday 9th June.

Spectators are very welcome at the event, and children are especially invited (with appropriate adult) to help by transferring “finds” from the site back to a tent where items will be assessed, cleaned and put on display for all to see.

On this occasion, the use of metal detectors is restricted to members of the Wyvern Historical Society, and therefore private detecting will not be permitted.
