Parish Council votes to move Bench from the Square

At the last Parish Council Meeting councillors voted to have the Memorial Bench in the Square removed and placed on the Green because of the rowdy and antisocial behaviour exhibited by a number of residents of Aldbourne who sit on this bench regularly.

Representations had been made by members of the public and owners of businesses in the Square to the Parish Council and this was their response to the problem.

Since then, there has been opposition to this proposal voiced by several members of the community who feel that moving a bench placed there in commemoration of a war hero without reference to the village as a whole, or surviving family, is not the right approach and should be more widely discussed.

The seat in The Square commemorates the life of Kingsley Osbern George Nugent (Flight Sergeant – Navigator – 305 (Polish) Squadron – Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve) who died on Sunday, 26th November 1944, aged 22; taking part in Operation Market Garden and is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. He was the son of George Nugent and Gladys Julia Nugent, of Aldbourne, Wiltshire.

Nigel Kerton, reporter for the Gazette & Herald has got to hear of this matter and is coming to Aldbourne, with a photographer, at 2:45pm on Monday 13th February 2012. If any resident of the village feels strongly about this matter, either way, you are invited to come along and make your views known.

Older residents of the village and historians state (see photo below) that there has always been a seat in the Square even prior to this commemorative bench, and there was certainly one there in 1936 and before.
