Calling all Hedge Experts

Calling all hedge experts – where is there a long Cornelian Cherry hedge in Aldbourne?

The website has received an enquiry about the above type of hedge from Mr William Dench in Salisbury. He saw the hedge mentioned in Ida Gandy’s 1975 book “The Heart of a Village: An intimate history of Aldbourne”. Apparently this type of hedge blooms in February, but the recent mild winter has meant examples nearer to Mr Dench have started to flower already (see his photo below).

We are pretty sure the hedge still exists as of 2002 (thanks to great detective work by Jo Hutchings), and we’d love to help Mr Dench with his enquiry. However, it might be known by a different name in these parts, as further useful information from Trish Rushen reveals that this cornelian cherry is often called “dogwood” locally, (same family as common dogwood, “cornus”).

So, are there any hedge fans, amateur botanists, eagle-eyed walkers or other plant sleuths who know the whereabouts of this hedge in Aldbourne, blooming or otherwise?

If you have any information about its whereabouts please do contact us, or post on the forum under “Hedge Request!”.

Thank you!
