Who is behind the Tardis?
Update – Tim Beattie has received a letter from Claire Perry at the House of Commons in recognition of the Tardis bin, please download a copy using the link below. Well done from us all Tim!
There is a new arrival in the Square. It seems that Dr Who is paying a visit, as a Tardis has appeared next to the bench by the phone box. Closer inspection reveals that it is slightly smaller (at least on the outside) than the real Tardis, though it’s perfectly proportioned, and wonderfully detailed. So what is it? Who is behind it?
Well, it’s a bin – but clearly not an ordinary one. It is the work of Tim Beattie (from West Street Motors) with some assistance from a few of the younger residents of the village. Tim and his team came up with the idea as a result of the litter problem that he encountered in the square. He explains:
“I noticed that there always seemed to be rubbish strewn around near the phone box, so I had a chat with some of the youngsters who sit on the bench there. I’d asked them to pop their litter in the bin, at which point they had pointed out that there wasn’t even a bin there! The other bins near the pond all seemed to be overflowing.”
Tim continues: “So, I offered to hang a rubbish sack by the bench, which I’d empty every day on my way to work, if they’d agree to use it. They did use it, and shortly after a standard bin was moved there. This improved the litter problem for a while. When it worsened again, the idea was raised of putting a customised bin there, one that was a bit different. The youngsters came up with the idea of a Tardis, because of Aldbourne’s Dr Who connections, so we set to work.”
After many hours spent burning the midnight oil at his garage, and later, with help from the youngsters, the Tardis was ready. It was officially unveiled on Wednesday evening, 7th December, with members of the Parish Council attending before their monthly meeting. Tim said: “I hope that this bin helps solve the litter problem, and I’m sure that the youths who are often in and around the square will keep an eye on it, to ensure that the good Doctor doesn’t attempt to retrieve it, not for a while anyway. If it works, then who knows, maybe we need a Dalek or two elsewhere in the village!”
